Lunch Room Changes

In effort to conduct a safe, respectful, and productive lunch we have made changes to the seating arrangements. The students sit with their class on one side of the table so everyone is facing the same way (towards the stage.) The students do not have assigned seats but must sit with their class. The students are then asked to be silent during the last 3 minutes of lunch so they can hear instructions. We have added 4 more lunch tables to accommodate this change and provide the students with some much needed space. The students can only get up once to throw away their trash, not several times for each item.

The behaviors that led to this change were that the students were consumed with socializing and not finishing their lunches, screaming across the table, multiple trips to the trash or condiment table, excessive amounts of trash and food on the floor, disrespect towards staff, throwing food and failure to be silent during the last 3 minutes for instructions. A significant amount of students were not using their Mustang Manners.

I brought up the issue at our leadership meeting and used their feedback to develop the new system. One of the major concerns I have heard is that this is the only time during the day the students can socialize. I would invite anyone who has that misperception to visit your student’s class or ask them about their day. Our students are actively engaged throughout the school day. They do not sit quietly in class without any communication with other students. There are multiple opportunities to socialize appropriately; snack time, recess, cultural arts, group work, partner work, literature circle, Socratic seminars, turn and talks, station work, etc.

Thursday, April 3rd – End of the 3rd marking period. 2 hour early dismissal.

Friday, April 4th – Health Walk kick-off assembly during the school day and packets sent home.

Monday, April 7th – Science Fair Project are due. Judging is on Tuesday, April 8th.

Tuesday, April 8th – Friday, April 11th @ 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Kindergarten Registration for the 2014-2015 school year. Your child must turn 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1. The following documents are needed to register your child for school: Birth certificate, immunization record, two proofs of address – lease/deed or mortgage statement (mandatory), the second proof of address can be a currently dated utility bill, pay voucher, bank statement, etc.

Tuesday, April 8th @ 5:00 PM – 9:30 PM – Chick-Fil-A CMES Spirit Night – Stop in or drive-thru the Chick-Fil-A in the Waugh Chapel Shopping Center anytime between 5:00 PM and 9:30 PM and they will donate a portion of the sale back to CMES . Don’t forget to bring the CMES card that will be handed out to students that day.

Thursday, April 10th @ 6:30 – 8:00 PM – Crofton Meadows Math Night. This year’s theme is Get Well With Math! Come out for a fun evening of Math activities and games. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please see below if you’d like to help with prep work or running a table.

If you have volunteered at home during the school year and have kept track of your volunteer hours, please send the number of hours to Jennifer Ator at cmesvolunteers@gmail.com by Wednesday, April 9th.

Math Night – Ms. Galvin is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s Math Night on Thursday, April 10th from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM. She needs volunteers to prepare items at home before the event and volunteers to run tables during the event. If you would like to help, please contact Ms. Galvin at tgalvin@aacps.org or at the school. Please put “Math Night” in the subject of your email.

Career Day – If you or someone you know has an interesting career, the CMES students would love to hear about it! Please contact the Career Day Coordinator Jessica Awad at cmesptopresident@gmail.com if you would like to participate. Career Day is Friday, April 25th beginning at noon. Lunch will be provided.

Texas Roadhouse Night – Come join us next Tuesday, April 1st from 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM for a night of good food and fun while we support a member of our Crofton Meadows Elementary family with their battle with cancer. It’s kids night so the great Face Painting Lady will be there as well as crafts and a free sundae bar. 10% of the proceeds will be donated as well as 100% of proceeds from a raffle where lots of good stuff will be given away. Either bring the flyer that was sent home with students or pick up one at the raffle table. Thank you!

CMES Green Gallop 5K and Family Walk – The CMES Green Committee is hosting the CMES Green Gallop 5K and Family Walk on Saturday, May 3rd at 8:00 AM at Davidsonville Park. All proceeds will go toward helping CMES become a certified Maryland Green School. This event will raise funds for an outdoor classroom, a butterfly garden, natural animal habitats for students to observe, new materials for green-themed lessons, landscaping tools to maintain the gardens and much more. Registration forms were sent home or sign up online at www.greengallop.wix.com/cmes5k. Please note the prices on the registration form are incorrect. CMES students are free, $10 for parents and siblings and $20 for the general public. Register by April 14th to guarantee a t-shirt.

Bricks 4 Kidz Summer Camps – Bricks 4 Kidz, one of our community partners, is offering a $20 discount to CMES students if they register for one of their summer camps before April 15th. Crofton Middle School Musical – Rogers and Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA! is coming to Crofton Middle. You will not want to miss this amazing performance by the cast and crew of 105 CMS students! Tickets are $7 a piece and are on sale now. The shows are at 7pm on 3/28, 3/29, 4/4 & 4/5 and at 2pm on 3/30 and 4/6. On Sunday, March 30th after the show the cast will be hosting a Cinderella Tea Party to raise funds to pay for new microphones. There will be activities for the kids and “tea” (juice) and cookies too. There will be opportunities to take pictures with Cinderella, the Prince and all of the cast members. They will also have some activities for the younger kids. It is open to the public and the entrance cost is $5 / family or a donation to the mic fund. So tell your friends and family to come by for some fun with the cast!

Student Athletes vs. Substance Abuse Basketball Game – All CMES families are invited to attend a Crofton Middle School vs. Arundel Middle School 8th Grade Basketball Game on Wednesday, April 2nd at 6:30 PM at Arundel High School. There will be games, raffles and a DJ. The game is free but all students must sign a pledge to be drug-free to enter. Go Crofton Middle!

Science Fair – Attention students who are participating in The Crofton Meadows Science Fair: Boards are on sale in Mrs. Olivier’s classroom for $3. Completed projects should be brought into school on Monday, April 7. Students will be interviewed with their projects by judges on Tuesday, April 8. We are unable to include any additional students. We have interview times for those students who have turned in a form that has been approved by their teachers. If your child will not be participating after turning in a form, please let Mrs. Olivier know that as well. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Olivier at molivier@aacps.org.
